Google Design

A complete overhaul of the editorial platform for Google’s internal and external design community.

Google Design is a platform for exploring the intersection of design and technology. To support these diverse efforts we designed and built a new platform to enable editorial expression and the ability to evolve the experience over time.

We needed to allow the website to remain current, adapt quickly, and be more resilient to design trends.

Concept

By embracing a modular design system, we were able to create a flexible platform that could capture ‘newness over time,’ evolving in form and in experience. It allows for curated change through stylistic controls at the site, page, and component level.

Systems design

Styles cascade from components to pages to the site as a whole. This means global components like the menu reflect the current stylistic context

We also created a theming engine built on the Material You color library that gives authors eight palette options generated from a seed image or color.

Outcomes

  • Provided a platform for the launch of Material 3
  • Enabled the team to publish 50+ new, more expressive articles
  • Created brand-lift, attracting a higher caliber of design talent for open roles

Google Design team at Google, mutli-disciplinary Instrument team
